Project Overview

This PhD project focuses on the development of robust, low-cost, and compact laser delivery systems tailored for next-generation quantum sensors. These systems are essential for translating highly sensitive quantum technologies out of the lab and into the field, enabling applications ranging from underground mapping and navigation to gravity-based surveying and space-based sensing.

You will work on the design, development, and testing of integrated systems that may include laser generation and stabilisation, RF control, PID systems, and embedded electronics. The work aims to improve performance, reduce size and cost, and increase the resilience of laser subsystems in real-world operational conditions.

Research Environment and Collaboration

The project will be based in the School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham and delivered in collaboration with industrial partners and the Quantum Technology Hub in Sensing, Imaging and Timing (QuSIT) – one of five national hubs funded by EPSRC as part of a £160 million investment in quantum technologies. The successful applicant will be embedded in a vibrant, multidisciplinary research environment, benefiting from expertise in quantum systems, electronics, photonics, and systems integration. Close collaboration with industry will ensure relevance and impact in real-world deployments.

Candidate Requirements

Applicants should have (or expect to receive) a UK 1st class, 2:1 or equivalent in electronic engineering, physics, or a closely related discipline. Experience with electronics is essential, while prior knowledge of optical or laser systems is desirable but not essential.

Applicants should have a strong interest in applied research, be motivated to work on the practical challenges of quantum technology translation and enjoy problem-solving across multiple domains.

Funding and Eligibility

This studentship covers tuition fees and stipend for UK students only.
