Research Assistant

 

We are looking for a research assistant with a background in neurobiology to join the interdisciplinary laboratory of Dr Fränze Progatzky at the Kennedy Institute. You will contribute to a Wellcome funded research project to study the role of peripheral glial cells in the regulation of immune homeostasis and inflammation of the lung and to determine underlying pathways that control their interaction with other lung tissues in health and disease.

 

In this role, you will be responsible for maintaining accurate documentation of experiments and determining the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses. You will select, establish and adapt ex vivo experimental protocols to analyse glial cell function and cellular interaction in the mouse lung. In this post you will use specialist scientific technologies (multicolour flow cytometry, advanced 3D imaging, lung function equipment) in a laboratory environment and software (FlowJo, Fiji, Imaris) to collect, analyse, and present scientific data. You will ensure full compliance with HTA regulations regarding consent, traceability, storage, and disposal of human tissue. You will also contribute regular discussions within the laboratory and actively contribute to wider project planning; share research findings with colleagues within the institute and in partner institutions.

 

You must hold a first degree in biological sciences, together with sufficient specialist knowledge and relevant experience of working in an interdisciplinary research team studying tissue neuro-/immuno-biology. You will have hands-on experience with rodents, including handling, regulated procedures, and colony management, as well as experience in research with in vivo mouse models to study lung inflammation (including measurements of lung function) and in following and adapting protocols for ex vivo analysis of mouse tissue (flow cytometry, qPCR, immunohistochemistry, microscopy). You will demonstrate and ability to manage research, administrative tasks, and workload independently with excellent organisation, multitasking, and attention to detail together with strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a friendly and supportive team environment. You must have a UK Home Office Personal Licence and HTA training and demonstrated competency in handling and storing human tissue in accordance with UK Human Tissue Act regulations. Experience of contributing to reports and articles for publication is desirable.
