This PhD project offers the opportunity to explore a rich and rapidly developing area of research where powerful mathematical ideas unlock exact solutions in quantum physics. Most physical systems are notoriously difficult to solve exactly—but in rare and remarkable cases, hidden symmetries make this possible. These special cases, known as integrable systems, offer a window into the exact workings of quantum theories.

At Swansea University, our group has played a leading role in uncovering new classes of such systems—known as integrable deformations—and in exploring their relevance to string theory, quantum field theory, and holography. A particularly exciting recent development suggests that a higher-dimensional version of Chern-Simons theory might underpin all known integrable deformations, offering a unifying framework.

As a PhD student on this project, you will:

  • Investigate the mathematical foundations of this new six-dimensional Chern-Simons approach,
  • Explore how it can be used to construct and solve quantum systems with exact integrability,
  • Apply these ideas in contexts ranging from holography to resurgent quantum field theory.

The project lies at the intersection of geometry, algebra, and quantum physics, and would suit a mathematically inclined student with a background in theoretical physics or mathematics. Prior exposure to quantum field theory, string theory, or related areas is helpful but not essential—what matters most is curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn.

You'll be part of a vibrant research group with strong national and international links, and have the opportunity to travel, collaborate, and present your work.
