Research Associate (Computer Science)

University of York - Department of Computer Science

Location: York
Salary: £37,174 to £45,413 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 22nd July 2025
Closes: 11th August 2025
Job Ref: 14231

Introduction

The post is at the Department of Computer Science and is associated with the Integrated Quantum Networks (IQN) Research Hub. This newly funded hub is at the forefront of advances toward the so-called “quantum internet”, where quantum resources will be used at a distance to enable the game-changing power of quantum computing and quantum metrology for critical applications, whilst being verifiably secure. The IQN Hub focuses on the distribution of quantum entanglement at all length scales for quantum communications, distributed quantum computing, and quantum sensing.

Quantum networks transmit and share quantum information, exploiting entanglement and quantum measurement to achieve tasks beyond the reach of classical systems. The IQN Hub will address major challenges currently preventing the full establishment of the quantum internet - a worldwide series of networks interconnecting remote quantum devices through quantum links working alongside classical systems – and, in so doing, create fundamentally new communications and computing capabilities.

Role

This post focuses on developing protocols and methodologies aimed at:

  • Efficiently routing entanglement in quantum networks
  • Optimizing quantum network performance across multiple layers and levels of abstraction

The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in quantum communication and networking, with a solid command of both theoretical frameworks and practical tools relevant to the field.

Duties include:

  • Conduct research in quantum networking for the IQN hub and to contribute to the production of research papers
  • Assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects
  • To assist in the interaction with research and industrial partners in the IQN hub.
  • Conduct individual and collaborative research projects, duties to include: analysis and interpretation of research data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods;
  • Contribute to the preparation of research proposals and applications to external bodies
  • Undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities connected to the research project
  • Develop and initiate collaborative working internally and externally, duties to include: the building of internal contacts and participation in internal networks; collaboration with colleagues on joint projects as required

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

  • A first degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Electronic/Electrical Engineering, or a related field
  • A PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline
  • Solid knowledge of quantum information science, particularly in areas such as quantum communication, quantum networking, entanglement distribution, and quantum security
  • Strong understanding of network routing techniques and algorithms
  • proficiency in both general-purpose programming (e.g., Python) and scientific computing, with a preference for experience in Julia
  • Experience in writing up research work for publication
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide-ranging audience

Interview date: Week commencing 18th of August
