PhD Opportunity (Expression of Interest)
Title: Time Perception and Psychophysiology in Sport, Health Science and Physical Education
Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (Sept 2026 start)
Professor Andrew Edwards (The Education University of Hong Kong – EdUHK) welcomes expressions of interest from high-achieving international candidates interested in pursuing a PhD in the psychophysiology of sport, physical activity, or physical education. Applicants should hold a strong academic record in relevant fields (e.g., sport science, psychology, PE, or physiology), ideally with a Master’s degree and some publication experience.
This opportunity is open to candidates of all nationalities. Strong academic training and a demonstrated capacity for research will be essential for progression to the next stage.
The PhD project will explore how individuals perceive time during physical exertion and how this shapes motivation, enjoyment, memory, and performance, both in general populations and elite sport. It may involve EEG, eye-tracking, or applied fieldwork, depending on interest and expertise.
While this is not a confirmed PhD place, a small number of outstanding candidates will be supported to develop a strong research proposal and apply to the competitive Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), which offers a generous annual stipend (currently HKD 331,200, approx. EUR 39,000) and travel support for up to three years.
The HKPFS application window is expected to run from 1 September to 1 December 2025 for September 2026 commencement. Early expressions of interest in this project are strongly encouraged with a deadline of 31 August 2025 to allow time for joint proposal development and institutional endorsement.
To express interest, please contact Prof. Edwards (amedwards@eduhk.hk) directly by email with a CV and short statement of your research background and interests. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a Teams meeting with Prof. Edwards in early September 2025.
