About us:

Our Centre for Society and Mental Health is a cross-Faculty initiative between the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy (SSPP) and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN).

The centre aims to better understand the complex interrelationships between society and mental health, with a commitment to:

  • Ensure that the impact of social context is central to how we understand mental health;
  • Work in partnership with affected communities.

Bridging Divides is a Wellcome funded on-going interdisciplinary, international, and intersectional research project in the Centre for Society and Mental Health, which is investigating the causes of gender differences in youth mental health in London and Tokyo.

To help us complete this work, we are looking for a Senior Research Operations Officer to support the work of the centre.

About the role:

The Senior Research Operations Office will provide high-quality and comprehensive administrative, budgetary, and research project support to the Centre for Society and Mental Health and Bridging Divides project. The appointee will work closely with academics and researchers to support the day-to-day administration of the Centre and the Bridging Divides project and support with new funding applications to leverage additional funding.  As a busy and successful Centre and project, the role would be suited to someone who can manage multiple competing priorities, has good attention to detail, and can build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders, including colleagues in Finance, Human Resources, and the Research Management & Innovation Directorate (RMID).

You will work closely with the Centre Manager, Centre Co-Directors and Bridging Divides PI to provide pre- and post-award support.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 30/04/2028.

About you:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • Experience of managing grants or large-scale projects within HEI (or relevant sector) and a strong understanding of the research funding landscape
  • Clear task management and organisation skills; ability to work under pressure with competing and shifting priorities, deadlines and workload while maintaining a high level of attention to detail  
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with evidence of building and maintaining good working relationships and working collaboratively with research teams and people with lived experience  
  • Good knowledge and familiarisation with universities policies and procedures including financial, procurement and travel regulations  
  • High standard of numeracy with proven financial management and analytical skills 
  • Ability to present data in a clear and understandable way 
  • A commitment to a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion, actively addressing areas of potential bias 
  • Familiarity with the HR processes including supporting with recruitment 

Desirable criteria:

  • Understanding of Business World or other financial monitoring systems  
  • An interest in the area of society and mental health  
  • Relevant previous experience of supporting interdisciplinary research projects 
  • Understanding of the Worktribe grant application and approval process
