The Department of Mechanical Engineering at UCL is a large, multi-specialisation department with a strong reputation for interdisciplinary research and inclusive academic culture. Our research groups span Biomechanical Engineering, Energy and Environment, Marine Engineering, and Materials, Structures and Manufacturing.

We are now inviting applications for a Lecturer (Grade 8) or Associate Professor (Grade 9) in Maritime Engineering to join our Marine, Autonomy and Robotic Systems (MARS) Group. MARS is internationally recognised for its contributions to marine autonomy, clean maritime technologies, and resilient ocean environments. The group works closely with major funders including UKRI, Lloyd’s Register Foundation, and the European Commission, and plays a key role in delivering innovative education in Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to UCL’s leadership in maritime research and education. The successful candidate will develop a research programme that complements MARS’s strategic themes and makes full use of UCL’s world-class facilities. You will collaborate across the department and wider university, and contribute to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

We welcome applicants with expertise in areas such as naval architecture, hydrodynamics, marine systems engineering, port and coastal infrastructure, autonomous marine vehicles, and zero-carbon maritime technologies. You will also engage with industry and policy stakeholders to ensure your work has real-world relevance and impact.

Grade 8 appointees will be supported in developing their academic profile, while Grade 9 candidates will demonstrate sustained excellence across research, teaching, and leadership.

About You

We are looking for candidates who bring strong academic credentials and a collaborative mindset. You should hold a PhD/EngD in naval architecture, maritime engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline, and have a solid understanding of its core principles.

You will have:

  • A track record of high-quality publications and competitive research funding.
  • Experience in teaching and mentoring students.
  • Strong industry connections and a history of securing industrial funding.
  • A commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Experience in the maritime sector and a passion for advancing marine engineering education and research will be highly valued. If you’ve contributed to positive culture change in your field or institution, we encourage you to highlight this in your application.
