The Role
In this role, you will play a vital part in supporting the University’s performance spaces and the wide range of activities that take place within them, including teaching, research, outreach and external collaborations.
Working closely with academic staff and technical colleagues, you will ensure high-quality support for live performances and related events. This will involve providing technical expertise in areas such as sound, lighting, special effects, set building and props, as well as helping to coordinate and support the planning and delivery of performances. You will work directly with students and staff throughout the production process, offering guidance and assistance as required. A strong understanding of health and safety practices - particularly in rigging, hauling and set building - is essential, alongside the ability to maintain technical infrastructure and equipment to ensure that it is safe and compliant.
Effective communication skills are key, as you will be required to deliver inductions and training to students and staff, as well as liaising with a range of stakeholders to ensure the smooth running of all performance-related activities.
The team
The Technical Operations, Resources and Services (TORS) Team provides unified technical support across Sheffield Hallam University. The service supports face-to-face teaching and all practical activities to a high standard, supported by having a highly skilled technical services team.
The Digital and Creative team sits within TORS and provides support to academics, students and researchers in digital and creative disciplines such as acting and performance, film and TV, digital media production, photography, animation and sound.
The Digital and Creative team works closely with other teams to provide an agile and responsive service that delivers highly skilled support with customer service at the heart of it. We aim to enable students and staff to leverage maximum value from the specialist facilities through provision of excellent training and support. The main duties of the team include: demonstrating equipment and processes, troubleshooting issues as they arise; supporting students and academic colleagues; sharing skills and knowledge with other technical team members and maintenance of the site's infrastructure and logistical arrangements such as: housekeeping, management of inventories, equipment maintenance and health and safety-related support.
