Digital Technology Services (DTS) plays a key role in supporting the University of Reading by providing centralised IT services and products, with a primary focus on securing identity access. The Senior Security Engineer is a hands-on technical role at the heart of the University’s cyber defence, responsible for implementing, monitoring, and improving security controls to protect against information security threats. This includes configuring and optimising security tools, investigating alerts, analysing incidents, and contributing to effective detection and response processes.

Working closely with colleagues across DTS and the wider University, the Senior Security Engineer applies specialist expertise in areas such as Microsoft 365, identity management, and enterprise security technologies. The role is directly involved in maintaining and hardening University services, developing automation and tooling to improve monitoring and response, and ensuring secure integration of new systems through capital projects.

The post holder provides deep technical knowledge and acts as a trusted resource for colleagues, helping to ensure the University’s technology and information assets remain secure against evolving internal and external threats.

Team Structure

The SecOps team oversees the daily management of Microsoft 365, identity services, and security controls. Their responsibilities also include managing services such as certificate services and DNS.

The team operates across three specialised areas:

  • M365: Focuses on managing Entra and Microsoft 365 services for the university, including email.
  • Identity: Ensures effective account management and provides secure, automated access management solutions for users.
  • Security: Delivers support for security tools and provides expert guidance on security-related matters.

You will have :

  • Proven ability to manage a variety of security systems and services
  • Knowledge of security frameworks
  • Proven ability to run threat hunting processes
  • Excellent communication skills including presentation of technical issues for non-specialist audiences
