The full-time starting salary is normally £38,050 per annum, with progression available in post to £44,131 per annum.

As the Senior Technical Trainer in our growing team, you will work closely with our academic colleagues to shape the delivery of practical hands-on learning experiences for students on our specialist programmes.

The role is focused on designing and delivering specialist technical teaching for digital jewellery making practices within the School of Jewellery’s Tech Hub. There is a strong emphasis on demonstrations, skill delivery and technical training and we are looking for candidates with significant knowledge in the following areas:

  • Digital Design
  • Digital Manufacturing processes
  • 3D Scanning
  • 3D Printing
  • Laser Cutting
  • CNC Milling

As the Senior Technical Trainer, the successful candidate will be comfortable working within a team as well as on their own initiative. You will be expected to carry out all tasks associated with the running of a facility of this kind, as well as supervise other technical staff, this will involve.

  • Designing and delivering course specific technical training programmes
  • Training students, through 1:1 instruction and timetabled group demonstrations.
  • Maintaining equipment, and scheduling machine servicing.
  • Ordering materials and recording material use and stock levels.
  • Championing sustainable working methods and use of resources. 
  • Managing appointments and demonstration bookings
  • Creating and reviewing health and safety documentation.
  • Manage equipment loans and distribution.
  • Champion the use of specialist software and equipment.
  • Support the Technical Manager in maximising commercial benefits relating to the Tech Hub

The candidates should be qualified to degree level in a relevant subject (or equivalent level combination of qualifications, skills and experience) and be able to demonstrate significant advanced practical experience of digital jewellery design and production. The candidate should have strong communication skills with an ability to impart technical knowledge to individuals, groups of students, colleagues and external organisations. Have excellent IT skills including standard packages such as Microsoft Office programs, and be familiar with Asset Management software and online communication tools.

Candidates must have experience and significant working knowledge of jewellery making software such as SolidWorks, MatrixGold and Rhino.

Interviews will consist of a practical skills task and a formal question and answer interview. The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so, and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
