Faculty of Science and Technology 

Qualifications and Experience 

The successful candidate must possess a PhD from a recognized university, which should be in Physical Chemistry or a closely related discipline. 

Candidates should also possess:

  • Ideally at least three (3) years’ experience in teaching Physical Chemistry, at a recognized tertiary institution/university at the undergraduate level
  • A good record of research and publications in reputable, peer-reviewed journals 

Candidates with the following would have an advantage:

  • Postdoctoral research experience or equivalent
  • Cross-disciplinary research experience
  • Expertise in a core area of Physical Chemistry
  • Expertise in Computational Chemistry and/or Spectroscopy
  • Preparation of Research Grant Applications and completion of Grant Projects in the area of Physical Chemistry 

The following would be considered assets:

  • Certificate in university teaching and learning
  • Experience in the successful supervision of graduate students at the MSc, MPhil and/or PhD levels
  • Evidence of development or management of undergraduate Teaching Laboratories 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Providing quality teaching in Physical Chemistry at all levels and in all areas via face-to-face, online or hybrid modes
  • Developing an externally funded research programme in Physical Chemistry
  • Participating in outreach and other activities of the department
  • Supervising pgraduate students at the MSc, MPhil and PhD levels
  • Developing innovative and interactive course materials, incorporating technologies and approaches to accommodate diverse learning styles
  • Contributing to the Department's curriculum development initiatives
  • Participating in Departmental and University committees and initiatives 

Personal Attributes 

The Campus places high priority on individuals of integrity who can work well in a team and student friendly environment. Candidates should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. A good command of both oral and written English is essential.

Candidates should also: 

  • Be able to interact and work well with staff, students and industry stakeholders
  • Be able to provide leadership in research, teaching and curriculum development
  • Be able to engage students in a range of class sizes at all levels and display a genuine interest in helping students succeed
  • Display commitment to teaching and mentoring students of a diverse student population, and fostering an inclusive and student-centred learning environment
  • Be committed to developing the Department's outreach programme
