About the role

As Assistant Professor in Drama, Theatre and Performance, you will teach students across theory and practice, contributing to the broader culture of Drama within the Faculty of Media, Arts and Humanities.

  • Drama at Sussex is a department of dynamic researchers, educators and students, specialising in interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary theatre and performance.
  • We collaborate closely with the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, where students encounter a world-class public programme of theatre, dance, music, literature and film.
  • We engage with local and regional partners, working across disciplines and sectors.
  • Our specialisms include contemporary theatre-making, directing and writing, performance and ecology, popular theatre, choreography, anti-racist performance praxis and scholarship, feminist pedagogies, actor training, site-specific theatre and queer theatre and theory.
  • As scholars and practitioners, we are committed to socially progressive enquiry and change across all areas of our work.

About you

You will play an integral role in teaching and academic student support across a range of undergraduate theory and practice modules.

  • You may be an Early Career Academic or a scholar-practitioner, and will be invested in the transformational potential of arts education.
  • You will teach and assess students drawing on your research and creative specialisms, including theatre-making, theatre and performance analysis, directing, staging theatre texts and experimental and collaborative devising.
  • You will supervise dissertations and practice-based undergraduate projects and support students’ creative production processes.
  • You will contribute to Drama’s curriculum development and broader departmental activities including student recruitment, offering teaching and research areas to complement and expand our existing work.
  • First and foremost, we are looking for someone who is committed to collaboration, thinks in innovative and ethical ways about teaching, learning and research, and who understands the challenges today’s students face.
