We are a world class research-intensive university. We deliver teaching and learning of the highest quality. We play a leading role in economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Attracting and retaining high-calibre people is fundamental to our continued success.
Salary
Research Assistant: £33,002 - £33,951 per annum.
Research Associate: £35,608 - £46,049 per annum.
The Role
We are seeking a Research Assistant/Associate to join a pioneering research initiative assessing how hydrogen transport influences microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in pipeline systems.
As a Laboratory Research Assistant, you will execute core experimental work, simulating soil–pipeline environments under hydrogen exposure, measuring microbial activity and profiling microbial communities, and assessing corrosion damage to determine if hydrogen stimulates microbial activities that may promote corrosion and impact pipeline integrity.
You will set up and manage soil/sediment microcosms that replicate pipeline-adjacent conditions with controlled hydrogen levels. Measure changes in hydrogen concentration over time and analyse metabolites (e.g. hydrogen sulphide, volatile fatty acids, methane) that may have a detrimental impact on pipeline materials. You will perform microbial community profiling using 16S rRNA gene sequencing to identify microbial groups that have been associated with MIC (e.g. sulphate-reducing bacteria, methanogens, and acetogens).
You will record, analyse, and interpret experimental data; refine protocols and contribute to standard operating procedures and lab reports. You will also collaborate with Rosen colleagues to prepare a literature review to identify key knowledge gaps in the area.
The project is commercially funded by Rosen (https://www.rosen-group.com/en) a multinational engineering company and the post holder will work closely with Engineers and Materials experts in Rosen's Offices in Benton, Newcastle upon Tyne. The project will be supported by a dedicated project manager from Rosen and you will work to milestones and deliverables agreed with the project manager.
At the University the work will be direct by Professor Ian M. Head who will also line manage the appointed Research Assistant.
Role holders will be provided with academic and pastoral support within the School including advice on career goals and opportunities. They will also have access to specialist training opportunities.
The School of Natural and Environmental Sciences is home to world-leading teaching and research across the Natural Sciences. With internationally renowned expertise the work of the school informs ground-breaking research and teaching at the intersection of this diverse community.
