York St John University, located in the historic city of York with an additional campus in London, has a long-standing tradition as a distinguished higher education provider. The university's success is built on the quality of its academic teaching and research, thriving campus environments, professional and pastoral support, and values of inclusivity, innovation, and ambition. York St John is an ambitious, modern university, and it is an exciting time to join as the university is one of the fastest-growing in the UK. The new strategy for the next decade emphasises widening opportunities through education and contributing to a fairer world and a more prosperous region.
The Team
As a Cyber Security Analyst (Trainee), you will be part of the ITS security function, focusing on the ongoing cyber security of the university. The team includes experienced security professionals who safeguard the university's digital infrastructure by monitoring and defending against potential threats, implementing proactive measures such as vulnerability assessments, security training for staff, and incident response. The team collaborates with various departments to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and stays ahead of emerging cybersecurity risks.
The Role
The university is looking to recruit two Cyber Security Analysts (Trainee) who will be responsible for ensuring the cyber security integrity of the university. The role involves working with other ITS members to ensure a holistic approach to cyber security and providing targeted support to staff and students through the service desk and awareness programs. Responsibilities include monitoring network activity for potential vulnerabilities or breaches, assisting in the deployment of security protocols, and participating in incident response activities. The role also involves supporting investigative efforts during security incidents, analysing root causes, and recommending solutions to prevent future occurrences.
Beyond technical responsibilities, the role includes engaging with the university community through the service desk and security awareness programs, providing guidance, answering queries, and delivering tailored advice to staff and students. The role aims to foster a culture of cyber awareness and empower users to recognise risks and adopt best practices. As you gain experience, you will be encouraged to develop your skills through ongoing learning opportunities and exposure to the latest security technologies and frameworks.
Required Skills and Experience
Successful candidates should possess a strong sense of independence and motivation, a solid foundation in cyber security principles, and adaptability to handle both collaborative teamwork and autonomous incidents. Excellent analytical and communication skills are vital for interpreting and communicating complex data to support greater awareness and understanding of cyber security throughout the organisation. Enthusiasm for cyber security, commitment to ongoing learning, and a proactive approach to staying updated with the latest trends, threats, and best practices are crucial. Candidates should be comfortable operating independently and collaborating within a team.
