Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent

Nuffield College, a graduate college within the University of Oxford, is seeking to appoint a Director of Estates to lead the strategic development and operational management of its estate. This is a senior leadership role that offers the opportunity to shape the future of the College’s buildings and gardens, ensuring they remain safe, functional, and aligned with the College’s long-term vision.

The Director of Estates will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of maintenance and refurbishment across the College’s operational estate, including its gardens. A key part of the role will be to contribute to the design and implementation of a site-wide masterplan, working closely with the Bursar, College officers, and external consultants. The postholder will also play a leading role in developing and delivering the College’s sustainability strategy, ensuring that environmental considerations are embedded in all aspects of estate planning and operations.

This role involves managing a small, dedicated Works and Maintenance team, and the Director will be expected to provide clear leadership, direction, and support to staff. The successful candidate will take responsibility for health and safety across all maintenance activities, acting as the College’s Responsible Person for fire, asbestos, and legionella. They will also ensure compliance with statutory regulations and codes of practice, including those governing student accommodation.

The Director of Estates will oversee the delivery of approved minor capital works and support the planning and execution of major projects. They will be expected to manage budgets, negotiate contracts, and maintain effective systems for planned and reactive maintenance. Strong communication skills are essential, as the role requires regular reporting to College Committees and collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders.

Candidates must hold a degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant field such as project management, facilities management, or building construction. A recognised Health & Safety qualification (such as IOSH or NEBOSH) is essential, along with substantial experience in building or maintenance management, particularly in relation to mechanical and electrical infrastructure. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong financial awareness, proven leadership and team management skills, and a commitment to professional development. Excellent IT skills and a full, clean UK driving licence are also required.

Our benefits package includes 41 days annual leave inclusive of public holidays and closed periods at Christmas and Easter, free meals whilst on duty, a season-ticket loan scheme, private healthcare membership (as a taxable benefit) and contributory pension scheme.

Further particulars, including information on how to apply and further benefits, are available from the College website by clicking the 'Apply' button above.

The closing date for applications is Friday 26th September at 5pm.

Nuffield College values diversity in its Fellowship and particularly welcomes applications from women, from disabled people, and from black and minority ethnic people, who are currently underrepresented in senior posts at the University of Oxford.
