Are you a UK-registered health professional with a passion for global health? Do you want to tackle real-world health challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)? The University of Liverpool and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), with funding from Wellcome, are offering 4 fully-funded Clinical PhD Fellowships starting in September 2026 — and we want to hear from you.

Who we're looking for

We’re seeking applicants who are:

  • Clinically registered in the UK – with evidence of licence to practice at time of application
  • Academically excellent – with a 2:1 or above at undergraduate level or Masters level qualification at merit or above
  • Motivated by impact – with a clear passion for global health and improving outcomes in the Global South
  • Proactive – with clearly identified support from both a Liverpool-based supervisor (UoL or LSTM) and an in-country supervisor from an academically robust LMIC partner institute

You’ll need to submit:

  • A 500-word concept note outlining a feasible and impactful research project
  • A cover letter, CV, and letters of support from your Liverpool and LMIC supervisors

The proposed research topic can either be your own idea or one developed with your supervisors, but it must be relevant to local health needs in the Global South.

What’s included in the fellowship?

We offer a comprehensive package to support your research and professional development:

  • Salary & Tuition: Your current salary is fully covered, along with PhD tuition fees
  • Research Funding: £110,000 available for project costs and research activities
  • Travel Support: £2,500 to facilitate work-related travel and collaboration
  • Training Budget: £5,000 to support additional academic and skills training
  • Overseas Allowance: For 12+ months abroad, we offer a package covering rent, relocation, vaccinations, insurance and dependent support. For
