ABOUT THE ROLE

Working as part of multi-disciplinary teams, you will support the Principal Investigator in delivery of research activity on the ‘Consequences of Impaired Mitochondrial Division on Human Neural Integrity’ project.

The role is part time (18.75 hours per week) and fixed term for 14 months (01/11/2025 – 31/12/2026).

ABOUT THE TEAM

This Research Project is being delivered within the School of Geography and Natural Science and focuses on studying fundamental mitochondrial disease mechanisms. Our work is supported by the Academy of Medical Sciences and centres on an exciting project exploring the consequences of impaired mitochondrial division on human neural integrity.

As part of this team, you will collaborate with experienced researchers and actively support PhD students, contributing to a culture of shared learning and mentoring. We place strong emphasis on teamwork, training, and professional development to support research that advances our understanding of mitochondrial function and health.

ABOUT YOU

Applicants should hold a BTEC HNC/HND (or equivalent) qualification in Biosciences or relevant area and must have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge and practical experience in human cell culture techniques and ability to perform basic molecular biology and related genome editing techniques.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following:

Key accountabilities

  • Establish, culture and cryopreserve human cells lines (e.g. primary fibroblasts, iPSCs)
  • Prepare iPSC-derived cells and samples for DNA/RNA and protein analyses
  • Follow and perform standard laboratory SOPs to ensure consistency and compliance with best practice
  • Ensure timely completion of studies and maintain up-to date records
  • Maintain knowledge of health and safety regulations and assist with the completion and updating of safety documentation
  • Liaise with suppliers and manufacturers to source reagents, specialist parts and equipment
  • Manage laboratory orders and budget monitoring
  • Deliver inductions, demonstrations and training covering laboratory techniques and specialist equipment

The Person

  • Knowledge and experience in human cell culture techniques
  • Ability to prepare high quality samples for DNA, RNA and protein analysis from cell culture-derived samples
  • Experience in CRISPR/Cas9-based genome editing techniques are desirable
  • Demonstrable work experience in a relevant technical research role
  • Excellent team working skills and ability to collaborate effectively
  • Good organisation skills, meet deadlines, with a proactive approach to duties and strong attention to details
  • Ability to adapt to changes in laboratory research priorities
  • Ability to meet deadlines with effective time and resource management
  • Clear communication skills
  • Ability to foster a healthy research culture and contribute positively to postgraduate and  undergraduate student training and support
  • Diplomacy and ability to handle sensitive or difficult situations effectively
