THE PROJECT
The University of Essex in partnership with J.S.T. (U.K.) offers an exciting opportunity to a graduate with the relevant skills and knowledge to design, develop and integrate bespoke robotised solutions for the automation of wire assembly and insertion processes within a traditional electrical components manufacturing setting, with the aim of improving precision, accuracy and quality control.

DUTIES OF THE POST
The duties of the post will include:

  • Designing, developing, and implementing control systems for robotic arms, including vision-based control and sensor integration.
  • Carrying out experimental validation, system calibration, and performance optimisation of robotic and mechatronic prototypes.
  • Designing and fabricating custom parts (e.g. SolidWorks) using 3D printing and other rapid prototyping methods to support research and development.
  • Developing software and algorithms for robot motion planning (ROS), perception, and real-time control.
  • Preparing technical documentation, reports, and presentations to support project deliverables and disseminate results.
  • Collaborating with academic, industrial, and research partners to ensure project objectives are achieved.

These duties are a guide to the work that the post holder will initially be required to undertake. They may be changed from time to time to meet changing circumstances.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • MSc in Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or Electronic Engineering, or other related disciplines.
  • Experience in programming and controlling robotic arms.
  • Experience of working in Human Computer Interfacing.
  • Experience of laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with sensors and actuators.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience of working with robotic manipulators and motion control.
  • Proficiency in C programming for embedded and robotics applications.
  • Experience in 3D design & modelling using SolidWorks and related CAD tools.
  • Strong hands-on hardware skills.
  • Version control best practice, annotation of code.
  • Leadership (or potential to develop in this area).
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Communicating complex technical concepts to a range of audiences.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
