The Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford is looking to appoint a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Mineral Physics for 3 years.

The successful post holder will be responsible for carrying out research on lower mantle phase transitions, employing Brillouin Spectroscopy in the laboratory and time-resolved Synchrotron x-ray diffraction in (dynamic) diamond-anvil cells (dDAC). A focus will be on the cubic to tetragonal phase transition in CaSiO3 perovskite, but there is the possibility to study other lower mantle phase transitions.

The post holder will have the opportunity to conduct Brillouin Spectroscopy measurements on mantle minerals in the laser-heated diamond-anvil cell (DAC) using a new VIPA spectrometer, with the aim to study lower mantle phase transitions and quantify their seismic signature. Performing Synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments in the dDAC and taking active part in the group’s other synchrotron experiments is also a critical part of this role.
