Position

The Director of Strategic Growth is a new role for the Institute, commensurate with the development ambitions associated with our transformation to Turing 2.0, including a sharp focus on our grand challenges and missions, the need for diversification of resources and a relentless drive to pull-through impact from our science & innovation. We are therefore looking for a candidate with substantial commercial and/or fundraising experience and expertise, a results-orientated self-starter and a leader, who can help deliver a step change in our ability to raise the right resources to deliver our Institute vision, both in terms of unrestricted funding and restricted funding to deliver our goals as a National Institute.

DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Lead strategy and delivery of revenue growth from across key funders, sponsors and stakeholders, including, but not limited to industry, third sector and government (UK and international).
  • Cultivate and steward high-value relationships with new and existing funders, aligning their interests with the Institute’s vision, goals and missions.
  • Drive the development of new engagement models to maximise strategic revenue growth, to match the scale of our development ambitions needed to accelerate impact from our missions.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Leadership Team, the Science Executive Team and other Institute leaders to develop compelling propositions to key funders, sponsors and stakeholders.
  • Negotiate and close deals strategically to deliver maximum value and impact for the Institute, focusing on a small number of priorities at scale, whilst ensuring there is also room for some quick(er) wins.
  • Lead and shape the team responsible for development and ensure that we have the right capabilities to deliver, together with a high-performance and supportive culture.
  • Ensure all strategic revenue growth opportunities align with our values and comply with Institute policies and regulations.
Requirements
  • Degree or equivalent level of professional qualifications and/or experience.
  • Strong track record of securing major funding at the high seven-figure, and demonstrate potential to source opportunities at the eight-figure level and above, either in a commercial, third-sector, philanthropy, government or other relevant setting.
  • Extensive commercial and/or fundraising experience at senior-level and first class understanding of funders, partners and/or donors relationship management.
  • Proven ability to negotiate and close complex high-value strategic funding opportunities with long-term benefit to the organisation.
  • Outstanding commercial acumen and experience of managing team budgets effectively.
  • Successful record of widening engagement with diverse sponsors, funders, or commercial clients in target sectors, including demonstrable creativity and strategic skills needed to identify new opportunities, nurture a strong opportunities pipeline and secure revenue at scale.
  • Negotiation and diplomacy skills.
  • Track record of successful leadership and management, including implementing high performance culture.
  • Good understanding of the technology, higher education sector, national research institutes and universities and of the national and international data science and AI science, innovation and/or skills landscape is desirable.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

The Alan Turing Institute is based at the British Library, in the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter. We expect staff to come to our office at least 4 days per month. Some roles may require more days in the office; the hiring manager will be able to confirm this during the interview.
