The Division of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for a substantiation-track position in Philosophy, with an expected starting date of 2 July 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. We invite applications at all ranks (Assistant Professor / Associate Professor / Professor), though we especially welcome applications at the level of Professor and Associate Professor with substantiation.
While the subject area is open, a research background in Confucianism - and/or expertise in ethics, bioethics, moral philosophy, religion, or other areas of contemporary relevance - would be an advantage; strong applicants in other areas are also welcome to apply.
The successful candidate should demonstrate a commitment to excellence in research and teaching as well as a strong publication record appropriate to career stage. For applicants at the level of Associate Professor or Professor, a record of obtaining competitive external funding will be a plus.
Starting salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave and medical/dental benefits will be provided. Housing benefits will also be provided where applicable. Initial appointment at Assistant Professor rank will normally be on a three-year contract, renewable subject to mutual agreement. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
Application Procedure
Applications should be sent together with (i) a cover letter, including a statement of research and teaching; (ii) full CV; (iii) two writing samples of chapter/article length work, all in PDF format; (iv) record of teaching performance and syllabi of two proposed undergraduate courses. Assistant Professor applicants should arrange for 3 letters of recommendation to be submitted via Interfolio. Applicants at the level of Associate Professor and Professor should supply contact information for 3 referees who can provide letters upon request.
Review of applications will start from 1 November 2025 and will continue until the position is filled.
(Information provided by applicants will be used for recruitment and other employment-related purposes. Applicants should read the Personal Information Collection Statement before submission of application.)
HKUST is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to our core values of
inclusiveness, diversity, and respect.
