Research Associate in Ocular Molecular Biology

Manchester Metropolitan University – Department of Life Sciences

About the Role:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Molecular Cell Biology and Mechanisms of Disease Group led by Professor Luminita Paraoan, in the Department of Life Sciences at Manchester Metropolitan University. The project is central to the main area of interest in the group, specifically biology and function of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in health, ageing and disease. The project aims to use innovative advanced in vitro cell-based models to characterise the role of ageing in such relevant models through genetic and pharmacological interventions and to deploy CRISPR screens to interrogate specific pathways involved in the crosstalk between IRD pathogenesis and ageing.

The experimental research will be carried out in fully equipped, modern laboratories with state of the art facilities in the new Dalton Building in central Manchester, with opportunities to engage with numerous established national and international collaborations of the group.

About the Project:

Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) are a heterogenous group of degenerative disorders, mostly monogenic, impacting retinal structure and function, designated as orphan or rare diseases, i.e. affecting a limited number of the population, such that specific patient cohorts, and consequently the body of research and treatment options available, are extremely limited.

Later-onset IRDs also tend to generally be progressive, worsening with age. However, the biological and clinical implications of the natural ageing process on IRD progression, epidemiology, severity and, most importantly, the molecular mechanisms underpinning their pathology, have yet to be investigated. With an increasingly ageing population, a propensity towards late diagnosis, and IRD-related clinical features shown to deteriorate with age in progressive forms, the need to study this interaction becomes particularly significant and it is critical for enabling the development of novel and effective gene-agnostic therapeutic approaches.

The current project aims to deploy high throughput CRISPR-Cas9 genomic screening to identify molecular processes at the interface of IRDs and ageing that can be leveraged to develop gene-agnostic therapeutic approaches.

About You:

To be successful in this role, you will

  • Possess a PhD in molecular/cell biology, with an excellent educational and research record, inquisitive mind and exceptional drive for innovative research.
  • Bring excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to high quality research with experience in investigating models of disease and required skills in cell culture, molecular biology and interpreting complex datasets.
  • Apply your research skills to a stimulating and cutting edge research project and be willing to master existing techniques.
  • Be responsible for taking initiatives and responsibilities, under supervision of the principal investigator, in the planning of research, developing and applying suitable techniques and obtaining valid experimental data.
  • Be responsible for data analysis, records of findings, preparing internal and external presentations of your data and reports for research sponsors, contributing to drafting and preparation of publications for refereed journals and to writing bids for research grants.
  • Engage with the national and international collaborations of the group, and promote the reputation of the laboratory, Faculty and wider University.
  • Previous experience in CRISPR/expression screens is highly desirable.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The post holder will be expected to:

  • Engage positively in research activity in the broad area of Molecular Cell Biology of Ageing under the direction of the principal investigator, by working independently and in conjunction with other investigators and collaborators.
  • Complete high quality research in the area of RPE ageing biology and disease, leading on elements of the project, under the direction of the PI. This includes being responsible for data acquisition and analysis, accurate records of findings, preparing internal and external presentation of your data, reports for research sponsors, drafting and preparation of publications for refereed journals and contributing to writing bids for research grants.
  • Publish research outputs in leading peer-reviewed journals with an international audience, as lead author where appropriate.
  • Engage with relevant academic and professional networks through active membership of societies, associations etc.
  • Contribute to the development of effective applications for research funding from both research councils and other external sources in collaboration with the project lead/principal investigator and others.
  • Ensure that their skills and technical competence are kept under review and enhanced where required to enable them to utilise specialist equipment and software used in the research projects.

To Apply:

  • To apply, please submit a CV and covering letter detailing your suitability for the role.
