Background
City St George’s, University of London is seeking a Linux Support Engineer to join our Platform Services Team. You’ll help maintain and develop the University’s Linux infrastructure, supporting teaching, research, and professional services. This hybrid role combines remote working with time on campus and in data centres.
Responsibilities
Provide daily support for Linux services, including specialist support for key systems. Ensure availability for teaching, research, and other functions, following up on monitoring alerts and maintaining system security and backups. Assist with planning and carrying out regular maintenance such as patching and code releases. Participate in system monitoring, disaster recovery preparation, and the on-call rota to deliver out-of-hours support when required.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have strong experience deploying and managing physical and virtual Linux systems (CentOS, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu) in an enterprise environment. You will understand web technologies and have experience supporting VLEs or large-scale LAMP applications. Solid shell scripting skills are essential, with desirable knowledge of automation (Ansible), monitoring tools (Nagios), and database systems such as MySQL.
