Primary Science Advisory Teacher in the Humber (Maternity Cover)

The Centre for Industry Education Collaboration (CIEC) is a unique centre in the University of York’s Chemistry Department. CIEC is recognised for its expertise in creating and maintaining a diverse range of initiatives to inspire primary children and their teachers about science and its vital importance to our UK manufacturing base. CIEC has an established reputation for the delivery of high quality CPD to enhance science education and improve mutual understanding between industry and schools.

CIEC is looking for an experienced and successful primary teacher to deliver the Children Challenging Industry programme across the Humber region. The role is offered on a part time basis (0.35FTE) for six months starting from 5 January 2026, with the possibility of extension.  You will travel to schools and companies across the region to provide exemplary science teaching and CPD for teachers and industrialists. You will have strengths in teaching science, a high level of self-motivation, and enjoy working with other teachers and industry professionals.

You will be employed by the University of York and based in CATCH, Stallingborough. Training and support for running industrial aspects of the project will be provided by CIEC.

Role

You will develop a positive relationship between local schools and industry partners, and:

• deliver the advisory science programme (Children Challenging Industry) working in primary schools to improve science teaching
• introduce context-based learning to primary science teachers
• broker relationships with CIEC’s industry partners, resulting in site visits for children and ambassador visits into schools
• provide high-quality training and subsequent support for partner companies to enable effective site visits for 9-11 years old to take place.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

• First degree or PGCE in primary teaching 
• Working knowledge of a range of primary learning and development techniques and learning interventions, particularly science, and awareness of current trends
• Good oral and written communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy, and confident in delivering to diverse audiences 
• Good IT, planning and organisational skills
• Ability to monitor and evaluate training provision, recommend improvements, and influence staff and colleagues at all levels
• Ability to use initiative in problem solving and developing opportunities
• Good time management skills to organise workload to deliver under pressure to tight deadlines and work independently and collaboratively in a team
• Substantial experience of teaching in primary schools
• Ability to enthuse industrialists and teachers with commitment to CPD, equality and diversity
