About Us

IIED is an international policy and research organisation working to build a fairer, more sustainable world, in partnership with others across the globe. We stand up: challenging the systems and structures that perpetuate economic, social and environmental injustice – acknowledging our own role in this. We speak out: calling out the big blockers that prevent progress for communities and working to amplify voices, redistribute power, and strengthen rights. We innovate: developing, co-producing, and supporting evidence-based ideas to drive progress towards a thriving world for all. We collaborate: building connections at local, national, and international levels to support diverse partners to tackle the climate, nature, and inequality crises so that people and the planet can thrive. Come and be part of this exciting journey with us!

IIED hosts the peer-reviewed journal: Environment and Urbanization (E&U) as part of its long-standing urban research team. The journal is a critical element of IIED’s urban work and is IIED’s most-read publication. It is a significant global platform for collecting and sharing knowledge on urban issues, and is consistently ranked among the top journals in Urban Studies. E&U is published every six months, with a thematic focus, and aims to advance social justice in cities of the global South.

This is a part-time (0.6 FTE), permanent role, with flexibility to support work-life balance. It is an excellent opportunity for an experienced managing editor with strong insight and perspective on scholarly publishing.

The Role

We are seeking a managing editor who will help to guide the journal through a period of transition, as the current editorial team moves towards retirement. The most important duty is to ensure the smooth production and publication of two issues per year, from receipt of articles to final print publication. It is important to note that each issue of the journal has a thematic focus that is organised by guest editors, and that working with guest editors on the timely completion of each stage of the process is a key element of the role.

About You

To be considered as a Managing Editor for E&U, you will need:

- A degree or proven experience in international development, environmental studies, or urban studies
- Strong command of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat
- Familiarity with referencing tools such as EndNote or Mendeley
- A solid grasp of academic citations, impact scores, and research metrics
- Experience managing editorial workflows, collaborating with designers, translators, and production teams
- Practical experience in scholarly publishing, including peer review and plagiarism checks
- The ability to work closely with researchers to produce both academic and accessible research outputs

The Benefits

- Salary of £44,892 - £55,773, pro rata salary (£26,935 - £33,463) per annum
- 25 days' annual leave per year, plus bank holidays and additional leave over Christmas
- 7.5% employer pension contributions
- Flexible hybrid working options
- Enhanced maternity, paternity, and adoption pay
- Cycle-to-work scheme
- Employee protection scheme (life, critical illness, income protection)
