Merton College proposes to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in French for the period 5 January 2026 until 30 September 2026.
The main duties of the post will be: to teach undergraduates reading French for up to twelve weighted hours (i.e. approximately eight contact hours) per week in full term, to share in the organisational responsibility and administration of undergraduate degrees involving French, to act as Director of Studies for a number of students studying French, and to provide study skills and pastoral support.
The successful candidate will be able to teach French language, specifically French to English translation, at all levels; 1st year (Prelims) Paper III (Short Texts) and Paper IV (Narrative Fiction, but not necessarily the prescribed medieval text); and 2nd and 4th year Final Honour School papers in the modern period (19th century to present). They will have completed, or be about to complete, a doctorate in modern literary studies in French (1789-present). The ability to be an effective and inspiring teacher to high-achieving undergraduates is essential.
