English for Academic Purposes Teacher

Maynooth International Engineering College

Maynooth International Engineering College (MIEC), in partnership with Fuzhou University, are looking to recruit an enthusiastic English for Academic Purposes (EAP) teacher to join our international teaching team in Fuzhou, China and support our EAP provision, which is integrated into the college’s four STEM degree programmes. 

Main duties and responsibilities 

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching seminars, tutorials, conversation classes, and study skills sessions (approx. 16-21 contact hours per week).
  • Assessing students formatively and summatively throughout the semesters
  • Monitoring student progress, providing feedback, and reporting concerns to relevant staff.
  • Supporting students academically and pastorally in line with university values.
  • Being contactable throughout the 37h work week and available for workshops, assessments, team meetings, and occasional cover where needed.
  • Teaching and assessing on the online pre-sessional course each August
  • Contributing to the development of innovative teaching strategies and modules.
  • Maintaining subject knowledge and engaging in ongoing professional development;
  • Navigating Moodle for teaching and learning purposes, and communicating professionally via MS Teams and WeChat. 

Knowledge, qualifications, skills and experience 

It is essential that candidates have the following:

  • Eligibility for a Chinese work visa and teaching permit
  • An Honours degree in a relevant discipline
  • A TESOL/CELTA or equivalent qualification
  • Ideally at least 2 years of full-time teaching experience
  • Proficiency with VLEs and tools like MS Teams, Moodle, and Office 365
  • Experience in interdisciplinary and intercultural teaching environments
  • Strong skills in teaching, communication, organisation, teamwork, and admin
  • Native or near-native fluency in English (C2 level)
  • Experience in developing materials and facilitating technology-enhanced learning
  • Ability to teach mixed-ability academic language groups using communicative methods
  • Experience in designing, delivering, and assessing formative and summative assessment
  • A commitment to maintaining and enhancing teaching quality 

It is desirable that candidates have the following:

  • A relevant postgraduate qualification (e.g. Master’s in TESOL, TEAP, English Studies, Applied Linguistics or Trinity Dip. TESOL/ DELTA)
  • Teaching experience in a Higher Education (HE) context
  • A strong understanding of various academic contexts, conventions, and communities
  • Experience in teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESAP) to students of STEM subjects
  • Accreditation or membership with a relevant professional body (HEA, BALEAP)
  • Experience of teaching English for Academic Purposes (in-sessional or pre-sessional)
  • Ability to engage in curriculum and materials development
  • An interest in evidence-based teaching
  • Familiarity with the Chinese education system is an advantage
  • Familiarity with the knowledge base and principles of English for Academic Purposes

Salary and benefits 

English language teacher: 18000 – 21000 RMB per month (before tax). 

Holidays: Fully paid winter and summer holidays, as per the University’s academic calendar. 

Accommodation: 1500 RMB per month housing allowance. 

Insurance: Provided. 

Flights: Two sets of airline tickets to and from Fuzhou per academic year. 

Visa assistance: Must be eligible for working visa. 

Contract length:  2-3 years (with possibility of negotiations for renewal).  

Onboarding and relocation assistance: provided.
