About the Role
The Electron Microscopy Technician will support the School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) by managing the NanoVision Centre’s analytical facilities for research and teaching. You will oversee daily operations, focusing on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and related techniques such as TEM, SPM, and FIB. Responsibilities include user training, maintenance, consumables management, and ensuring health and safety compliance. Reporting to the Analytical Laboratories Manager, you’ll collaborate with technical teams to deliver a high-quality service.
About You
You hold a science-related degree (or equivalent experience) with proven expertise in SEM and at least one other microscopy or analytical method. You are skilled in instrument operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and supporting users with experimental design and data analysis. Strong organisational and communication skills are essential. Experience in research or higher education and familiarity with health and safety procedures (risk assessments, SOPs) are desirable. You should also be a team player committed to training and continuous professional development.

This post is based within the School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS), a large, multidisciplinary school with around 80 academics, 50 postdoctoral research staff and over 1,800 taught and research students. SEMS is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering, which has a growing international reputation for research excellence and innovation.
