Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Computational Chemistry and/or AI for Chemistry

Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Computational Chemistry and/or AI for Chemistry. The appointee is expected to develop an innovative research program complementary to existing strengths in theoretical and computational chemistry of the Department, as well as to mentor undergraduate and postgraduate students. 

The Position 

Applicants with expertise equivalent to, but not limited to, one of the following strategic areas or their combinations are invited to apply. 

  • Quantum chemistry or quantum dynamics
  • Computational statistical mechanics in biology, materials or soft matter
  • AI in chemical theory, computation and application for synthetic chemistry, chemical biology or functional materials 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain independent, productive and high-caliber research;
  • Publish research findings in reputable journals of their areas and present research at conferences;
  • Secure external fundings through grant applications;
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses, with the possibility of teaching Physical Chemistry lectures and laboratories;
  • Mentor undergraduate students in chemistry lectures and research;
  • Contribute to departmental service and duties; and
  • Engage in scholarly activities of the Department 

Essential Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Physical Sciences
  • Strong publication record
  • Teaching experience and ability
  • Research proposal that can synergize with the Department's existing research strengths
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality teaching and student mentoring
  • Strong communication and organizational skills 

What We Offer 

The appointment will be made on fixed-term full-time contract for 3 years initially, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of the second three-year fixed-term contract. 

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave, professional leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable. A start-up package tailored to the research needs and qualifications of the appointee will be provided.

Applicants should apply online and upload a cover letter, an up-to-date CV (including a full list of publications), a teaching statement (maximum 2 pages), a research statement outlining current and future research plans and interests, as well as contact information of at least three referees. It is important to note that at least one of the referees should be able to comment, amongst other things, on the applicant’s research ability and his/her contribution to research and teaching in his/her department, while the remaining two should have knowledge of his/her recent academic or employment experience. Review of applications will start as soon as possible and continue until April 30, 2026, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier. Only shortlisted candidates will be invited for interview.
