The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is inviting outstanding scholars to join our newly established Department of Architecture (ARCH) as Chair Professors, Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors.

About Department of Architecture: PolyU is going to establish the Department of Architecture under the Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE) with effect from 1 July 2026.  FCE is globally renowned for its excellence in Architecture & Built Environment and Civil & Structural Engineering, both ranked 17th worldwide by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS Subject Ranking) in 2025. As a new dynamic hub for architectural innovation, the Department aims to consolidate FCE’s academic strengths, drive innovative education and research, attract global talent, and elevate both the Faculty’s and PolyU’s international standing in architecture and advanced technologies.  

The Department is looking for enthusiastic and established outstanding scholars to join the team and help build a strong academic community to achieve transformative impact in AI-enhanced and big data driven architectural education and research. Our priority research areas include: 

  • Architecture Technology and Engineering
  • Urban Planning and Design
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Heritage Conservation / Architectural Heritage

To boost the leadership and impact of PolyU’s research work in areas of significant societal needs and strategic importance, the Strategic Hiring Scheme is introduced to recruit faculty members at all levels and outstanding scholars will have the chance to join the University under the Strategic Hiring Scheme.  Appointees recruited under the Strategic Hiring Scheme should have conducted / led world-leading research that is commensurate with the stage of their academic career. Appointees under the Strategic Hiring Scheme will be offered a start-up grant of not less than HK$3 million to support research activities (including the admission of PhD students, purchasing of equipment, and hiring of research staff) in the initial three years.

Duties 

The appointees will be required to:

  1. Undertake teaching duties at various levels in the above architecture related areas;
  2. Engage in programme and curriculum planning, development, validation, accreditation and administration of architecture-related programmes 
  3. Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and theses;initiate and lead scholarly research projects in their areas of expertise, actively pursue quality journal publications, and seek external research grants to enhance the Department’s research strengths;
  4. Undertake relevant administrative duties; and
  5. Perform any other duties as assigned by the Dean and the Head of Unit or his/her delegates. 

Qualifications 

Applicants should: 

  1. Have a bachelor degree in Architectural Studies and a master’s degree in Architecture or equivalent, leading to an architect professional qualification; 
  2. Have a PhD degree in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Urban Planning, Landscape Design or a related discipline; 
  3. Have knowledge of advanced technology related to Architecture and Design, including proficiency in BIM, Revit and other relevant tools; 
  4. Have substantial years of relevant post-qualification experience, in particular programme development and management; 
  5. Have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research; 
  6. Have an excellent proven record in research and scholarship achievement; and 
  7. Be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills and have good interpersonal skills.  

Applicants for appointment at Chair Professor level should have an outstanding record of global leadership and research achievement in the community, in addition to substantial years of relevant post-qualification experience. 

Applicants for appointment at Professor or Associate Professor level should have a substantial number of years of experience and an excellent record of relevant academic and/or research achievement in the specified field. Applicants with less experience will be considered for appointment at the level of Assistant Professor.  

Conditions of Service 

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment for Assistant Professor will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. An appropriate term will be provided for appointment at Associate Professor / Professor / Chair Professor levels.
