Part-time Panel Tutor for the Undergraduate Certificate in History, Easter 2026
The University of Cambridge’s Professional and Continuing Education (PACE), based at Madingley Hall, offers a vibrant and diverse array of courses for personal enrichment and academic and professional development. Courses range from non-award-bearing courses, many of which are open-access, to innovative part-time Master of Studies (MSt) degrees. Around 300 PACE panel tutors, across a variety of academic disciplines, make a vital contribution to the quality of teaching, learning and student support.
We are currently seeking applications from suitably qualified individuals with expertise in History to join our expert panel of hourly-paid, part-time sessional tutors. The panel tutor will undertake a variety of allocated roles on the Undergraduate Certificate in History (Easter 2025) such as: the delivery of online teaching; providing students with ongoing academic support; conducting marking and providing feedback on assessments; managing the virtual learning online platform.
The panel tutor will teach the origins of Fascism in the chaotic aftermath of the First World War and provide an overview of the essential characteristics of the principle movements. The course will explore how Fascism manifested itself through ‘political theatre’ and examine the concept of ‘civic religion’ and its importance to our understanding of the inner dynamic of these movements. It will also assess the case of collaboration during World War II – from Finland to North Africa, from Spain to India. Why did individuals and countries choose to fight with or alongside Nazi Germany? Finally, the course will draw conclusions together in an attempt to offer a definition of ‘Fascism’.
Classes will be taught on-line on Zoom on Saturday (and one Sunday) afternoons in April and May 2026 (4 & 5 April, 11 April, 18 April, 25 April, 2 May, 9 May, 16 May). The successful tutor will teach these classes with a mixture of informal lectures, class discussion and break-out rooms. The tutor will also mark two assignments per student: one primary source evaluation and one comparison of two set articles.
Candidates will be educated to at least Master’s level and will have experience of teaching in a higher education setting. PACE’s Undergraduate Certificate in History course can be viewed here: https://www.pace.cam.ac.uk/courses/undergraduate-award-certificate-history
Preferably, applicants will have experience of teaching diverse cohorts of undergraduate students in an established university setting and have experience of marking and providing feedback for summative assessments. A recognised higher education teaching qualification would also be beneficial. A student-centred approach and an interest in supporting adult part-time students from a broad range of educational and professional backgrounds is essential.
