The role
The School of Modern Languages is seeking to recruit a fixed-term Lecturer in Spanish from January 2026 to 1 January 2027 (or earlier return of the post holder), on 0.8 of a Full-Time Contract (80%), as part of a maternity leave cover.
It seeks an excellent and experienced teacher to deliver pre-existing units relating to the culture, literature and history of the Hispanic world, and to contribute to the School across its educational, research and administrative activities.
In keeping with the Department of Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American Studies’ strong research profile, strong candidates will be able to demonstrate that their teaching is informed by their own recent research in the field. The appointed candidate will be supported in developing their research trajectory and publications by senior colleagues in the Department.
What will you be doing?
The successful candidate will co-direct and teach two specialist units: for Year 2 undergraduates ‘Rewriting Spain’ and ‘Afterlives of Empire’ for Year 4 undergraduates. These are optional units for students of Spanish in the Department of Hispanic, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. Teaching for these two units will be delivered in person through a combination of lectures and seminars (two hours per unit up to 24 students, 3 hours if the number of students exceeds 24). The role involves maintaining and updating the online Blackboard page for the units, which includes all the information and materials that students need. Assessment duties for both units will also need to be fulfilled.
You should apply if
You have: ·
- Experience teaching in undergraduate Spanish programmes in Higher Education
- PhD in Spanish or related field of Modern Languages, History, or Humanities
- Ability to stimulate and encourage the commitment to learn in others.
- Ability to use initiative, and apply creativity, to solve problems that are encountered in the teaching and/or research context.
- Ability to organise your own time and work, to meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities.
