Institute for Study Abroad

Location: London
Salary: Competitive
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 8th December 2025

Job Ref: 1255

The Institute for Study Abroad is seeking an instructor to teach a course entitled Black Individuals in the British Royal Family and Aristocracy for the IFSA Study in London program over the upcoming Spring semester.

This class delves into the rich and complex history of Black individuals in the British royal family and aristocracy, blending historical study with sociological analysis and pop culture exploration. Students will examine the presence and contributions of Black courtiers, nobles, and historical figures in British high society, while also exploring how contemporary media and culture reinterprets and represents these narratives. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the class will explore themes of race, class, identity, and representation in both historical and modern contexts, questioning how popular culture influences perceptions of British history and aristocracy.

Along with teaching, the instructor will also be responsible for assessment and marking, and the design of at least two co-curricular activities (guest speakers, site visits, etc) designed to expose students to new perspectives and help them integrate, apply, and synthesise key learning. The syllabus for the course has been approved by our School of Record, however minor modifications can be made in agreement with the Academic Programs Manager.

IFSA is committed to the professional development of its faculty, and opportunities for professional development will be made available to the successful candidate.

Semester dates: 14th January 2026 – 8nd May 2026

While contracts will initially be offered for the Spring term only, we fully intend for the course to run in both Fall and Spring semesters. Contract renewal will be subject to student demand and instructor performance.

Teaching hours: 3 hours teaching per week over 17 weeks (1 reading week and 1 week of holiday closure is provided). Total 45 contact hours. The course will be delivered across two sessions: Tuesday and Thursday 9.00-10.30 (the timetable is set, so candidates should be available at these times). Our instructors also provide one office hour per week where they are available to meet students.

Candidates will need to have the right to work as self-employed in the UK, this post is not eligible for visa sponsorship or PAYE.

Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their details as soon as possible. Interviews will take place on a rolling basis.
