Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biostatistics

The Division of Population Health and Applied Health Sciences (PHAHS) invite applications for a tenure-track position in Biostatistics.

This appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor although consideration may be given to hiring at the rank of Associate Professor. This appointment is anticipated to commence in September 2026. 

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to the undergraduate medical program and graduate programs in PHAHS, establish an independent, externally funded program of research, and participate in service activities (including statistical consulting services to the Faculty of Medicine, the Schools of Nursing, Pharmacy, and others). 

The successful candidate will be expected to apply biostatistical knowledge and skills to teaching at undergraduate and graduate level. The successful candidate will be expected to teach some of the existing statistical courses in PHAHS and to develop advanced biostatistics courses to meet the needs of research and educational programs in the Faculty of Medicine. The existing courses in quantitative analysis offered by PHAHS include: 

Med6200 – Biostatistics I

Med6260 – Applied Data Analysis for Clinical Epidemiology Med6262 – Biostatistics in Clinical Medicine

Med6278 – Advanced Biostatistics for Health Research Med6802 – Big Data Research and Analytics for Health Care 

The candidate is expected to be an independent researcher and to develop an externally funded research program. We welcome applicants whose research program is in statistics, or in any health-related discipline, with commensurate expertise in teaching biostatistics. Those with statistical research expertise that compliment current faculty in PHAHS are especially encouraged to apply. These research areas include, but are not limited to genetics, machine learning, public health, human neuroscience, knowledge translation and implementation science, health policy, health services research, and epidemiology. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary, health research-oriented environment, and will be expected to supervise the research of graduate trainees as part of their independent research program.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must possess a PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics, or a Health-related discipline. Applicants with a PhD in a health-related discipline must demonstrate commensurate expertise in biostatistics in their research program or teaching dossier. Applicants should demonstrate a strong publication record, and those applying at the Associate level must present evidence of an established, externally funded research program.

The Division of Population Health and Applied Health Sciences (PHAHS) is part of the Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine. PHAHS is home to graduate programs in the fields of public health and public health nutrition, community health and clinical epidemiology, applied health services research, and bioethics. It contributes to the interdisciplinary occupational and health and safety graduate program and leads the development and delivery of the community health, and bioethics and health law components of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. PHAHS is home to Memorial University’s Centre for Bioethics and the Faculty of Medicine’s Office of Social Accountability. It is partner to the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Applied Health Research (NLCAHR) and the Human Neuroscience Research Centre
