The College proposes to appoint a 4-hour Stipendiary Lecturer in Preclinical Medicine from April 2026 to July 2027, based at Wadham College. This is a temporary, fixed-term position to fulfil a current teaching need arising from a period of leave being taken by Professor Andrew Farmery.
The lecturer will be required to give on average four hours per week of tutorials for Wadham College during the eight-week term. They are also expected to be available during both term and for some periods of the students’ vacations to offer organizational, pastoral, and admissions support. The College admits an average of six undergraduates a year to study Preclinical Medicine, with the majority of these students remaining at the College for their clinical training.
Key duties include arranging teaching, pastoral care of undergraduate students, setting and marking collections (termly college examinations), attending Tutorial Board meetings, and taking part in the undergraduate admissions exercise.
The lecturer will be expected to take responsibility for teaching the following papers: 1st BM Part 1 Physiology and Pharmacology, 1st BM Part 2 Applied Physiology and Pharmacology, and FHS tutorials in an intercollegiate basis in the lecturer’s area if and when required.
We welcome applications from non-clinical scientists and also from clinical applicants with relevant research and teaching experience. It is expected that the successful candidate will have proven teaching experience relevant to the subject range to be covered. The successful applicant will be asked to provide proof of right to work in the UK before the post can be confirmed. Please note that the stipend offered for this post means that the College is not in a position to sponsor a Skilled Worker visa.
The stipend will be on a scale from £11,270 per annum, subject to revision in line with national adjustments to University teachers’ salaries. The position is superannuable under USS. The lecturer will be a member of the College’s Senior Common Room, will have shared use of a room for teaching, and will be entitled to four meals a week, when the kitchens are open, free of charge. The lecturer will also be entitled to apply to research funds of up to £212 per annum and will receive a small allowance (currently £413) to entertain undergraduates as part of regular pastoral contact.
Applications, consisting of a covering letter (detailing the candidate’s suitability for the post) and a curriculum vitae, should be emailed to tutorial@wadham.ox.ac.uk by noon on Tuesday 20th January. Applicants should ask two referees to e-mail references directly to tutorial@wadham.ox.ac.uk by the same date. It is likely that interviews for this position will be held during the week commencing Monday 9th February.
