LSE is committed to building a diverse, equitable and truly inclusive university

This is a permanent appointment

The Learning Lab is where LSE students come to develop and practise the skills they need to reach their academic goals. We help students understand what is expected of them in their academic work and discover a range of learning approaches, particularly with respect to key areas like critical thinking, reading academic texts, drafting, writing and editing academic work, planning and conducting research, upholding academic integrity, managing deadlines, and more.

The Learning Lab’s practical hands-on workshops and personalised one-to-one support, offered year-round, are central to many LSE students’ journeys to becoming more confident and more independent learners and thinkers. This central team is an established resource for all undergraduate and postgraduate students - but also for academic and professional staff as a place where they can confidently send their students who are looking for advice or support outside their department.

We are looking for someone to lead this team at an important moment. The Learning Lab has recently become a distinct, specialist team within the division of Student Learning and Personal Development (SLPD), after previously being part of a larger structure. The team and their work are well-established and known in the School. What’s new is the opportunity to shape the team’s identity and future direction as a specialist unit.

This is a leadership role that requires both strategic thinking and hands-on engagement. You will be managing a team of Learning Developers who design and deliver workshops and overseeing Study Advisers who provide individual support to students. You will also be navigating one of the biggest challenges facing university education right now: how generative AI tools fit into learning and academic study.

Candidates should have:

  • Proven track record of leading teams, including supervision, development, and performance management
  • Experience managing change and leading teams through periods of development or restructuring
  • Extensive grounding in areas related to learning, learning development, student transitions and experiences, academic literacies in a university context, evidenced by doctoral or master's level degree, relevant publications, or related professional experience or fellowships
  • Authoritative knowledge of learning theory and pedagogy, with proven ability to apply theoretical frameworks to practical student support contexts
  • Ability to write student-facing materials that demonstrate both deep pedagogical expertise and genuine understanding of how students experience and articulate their learning needs

Please note that hours of work will need to be flexible and may include some evenings and weekends.

We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave, hybrid working, and excellent training and development opportunities.
