The UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) London Study Center, supports academic programs serving approximately 500 students annually at 12 partner institutions across England.

Under guidance from the Program Manager, and as a key member of a small office, the Program Officer resolves student services-related issues according to clear guidelines and/or policies on a variety of academic, administrative, and student life matters inherent within education abroad programs. Makes periodic site visits to partner institutions to advise students and to consult and strengthen work relationships with liaisons. Collaborates with UCEAP colleagues to organize and implement student orientations and other events. Exercises sound judgment when escalating and consulting on complex issues. Guidance on complex issues requiring in-depth knowledge of programs is provided by the Program Manager, the UCEAP Systemwide Office, UC campuses, and partner institution offices specializing in those fields. On a rotating basis, serves as an on-site contact for emergency student welfare issues, including after regular business hours, to resolve or escalate cases with local leadership and/or UCEAP Systemwide Office as needed. Performs general administrative services, assists in the planning and implementation of student events, and participates in occasional weekend cultural activities. Maintains office academic records, student database, and supports program promotion efforts through use of social networking media and other resources.   

Requirements

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong professional English verbal and written communication skills, typically equivalent to CERF level C1 or higher. Skill in obtaining and conveying information clearly and with accuracy.
  • Solid interpersonal skills with proven ability to engage with students and employ counseling techniques with sensitivity including appropriate referrals.
  • Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Demonstrated project and operational management abilities to coordinate a broad range of operational, academic, and student welfare and conduct issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to listen, learn, and build trust among faculty, staff and students.
  • Commitment to valuing diversity and creating an inclusive work environment.
  • Previous customer experience supporting and providing student services including academic advising, and counseling; ability to assess and give appropriate referrals.
  • Knowledge about current safety, security, and health issues as they affect students abroad.
  • Ability to problem solve and use sound judgment and decisions making skills on concepts requiring analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of the structure and organization of British and US higher educations systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the goals of education abroad programs.
  • Sound judgement and proficiency in ability to use discretion, maintain data privacy, and maintain all security and confidentiality with sensitive and personally indefinable information (PII).
  • Proficient in MS office or similar, cloud- based computing and collaboration platforms (MS Teams, SharePoint, etc.), virtual meeting platforms, familiarity with social media platforms; and willingness to learn other applications and technologies as needed.

Special Conditions

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the UK without sponsorship.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and abroad on an occasional basis.
