The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic, ideally time-served Electrical Technician to join our team in a practical, workshop and laboratory-based role within the School of Engineering. This post focuses on the hands-on repair, operation, maintenance, and development of electrical facilities.

Based across a range of laboratories and workshops, you will provide high-quality technical support to enable teaching and research activities, ensuring equipment and facilities are safe, reliable, and fit for purpose. You will be supported by the Technical Team Leader and the School Technical Manager.

Working as part of a team of Electrical and Electronic Technicians, you will be directly involved in the installation, fault-finding, repair, calibration, and upkeep of laboratory equipment and systems. This includes practical work with test rigs, instrumentation, motors, and AC electronic motor drive systems.

If you would like to discuss this opportunity in more detail, please contact the Technical Operations Manager, Stephen Robson (stephen.robson@ncl.ac.uk), or the Technical Team Leader Roy Proud (roy.proud@ncl.ac.uk)

To apply, please submit an online application including your CV and a cover letter outlining how you meet the essential criteria for this role.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical support for teaching and research activities
  • Repairing, designing, and supporting equipment related to single and three-phase control systems, process control, motors, and electronic AC drives.
  • Assisting staff and students on the safe use of laboratory test equipment
  • Designing, building, and modifying electrical test rigs
  • Applying knowledge of electrical power systems and associated safety devices
  • Interpreting and working from electrical wiring diagrams, including safety and emergency stop circuitry
  • Supporting work with motors, drives, and electrical machines
  • Good IT skills

Note:

This is not an electrical ‘installation' role, you will not be involved in installing building electrical systems or carrying out site-based electrical work.
