About the Role
The Department of Education at the University of Oxford wishes to appoint a Research Assistant to work with a team of mathematics educations researchers investigating spatial reasoning. Initially investigating how maths and science practitioners think about mathematical images, the study aims to support secondary mathematics students to develop spatial reasoning skills.
The main duties of the postholder will be to bring together the literature from the education and psychology fields; support development of an observation framework; support data collection; support data analysis by applying the framework to transcripts; and assist development of teacher support materials. Due to the technical nature of the focus, a mathematics background will be necessary.
You will hold a first degree in Mathematics or a related discipline, will have experience working with secondary age students, and will have some educational or social-science research experience.
Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential. You should be highly motivated and be able to work independently and to meet strict deadlines.
The post is 0.4 FTE (2 days per week), from February 2026 for a fixed-term of 3 months in the first instance.
