The John Innes Centre is an independent, world-leading centre of excellence in plant science, genetics and microbiology located on the Norwich Research Park.  JIC performs cutting-edge, high-quality fundamental, strategic and applied research and is one of eight BBSRC strategically funded Research Institutes. You can read more about us here.

We are looking to appoint an Independent Member for our Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI) Programme Board with significant experience in managing change involving major capital investment and associated business transformation. Experience serving on executive or non-executive boards, and successful leadership in academic, research or commercial environments, would be advantageous.

The role                                                                                               
The successful candidate will support the NGI Programme Board in overseeing the delivery of a c. £400m programme of investment comprising phased roll-out of infrastructure renewal and refurbishment across its campus on the Norwich Research Park (NRP).  The investment aims to improve sustainability of the infrastructure and deliver defined benefits through improved business activities.

This role will bring the NGI Programme Board specific expertise in major public sector programme delivery with a view to ensuring good governance and appropriate challenge.

Delivering the NGI vision
The Next Generation Infrastructure (NGI) programme will deliver world-class facilities for the John Innes Centre (JIC) and The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) at the Norwich Research Park, supporting their Healthy Plants, Healthy People, Healthy Planet vision. A new shared laboratory and support building will bring researchers together in a flexible, modern environment that enables cutting-edge research, training and collaboration, while acting as a national hub for plant and microbial science.

The investment aims to:

  • Create a world-leading, state-of-the-art research hub aligned with the UK Plant Science Research Strategy.
  • Bring a critical mass of research and technical expertise together, strengthening connectivity across the Research Park.
  • Provide an inspiring workplace that attracts top scientists, businesses and collaborators.
  • Inspire the next generation of researchers and innovators.
  • Deliver a Net Zero Carbon facility using low-carbon design technologies.

The ideal post holder:

The NGI Programme Board includes senior executives from JIC, TSL and EI, an independent non-executive Chair from JIC Governing Council, and a senior BBSRC/UKRI representative as principal funder.

The appointed member will:

  • Help ensure the Board operates efficiently, effectively and in the public interest, aligned with JIC’s charitable purpose.
  • Contribute constructively to discussions, sharing relevant expertise.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, regulations and JIC Governing Council guidance.
  • Use their skills and experience to support informed decision-making.
  • Act as a JIC representative with key stakeholders.

Additional information:
The postholder will commit approximately 8–12 days per year, including preparation and bi-monthly Programme Board meetings in Norwich. The appointment is for a minimum of three years, with the possibility of a second term subject to approval. 

The role may be undertaken remotely, although attendance at in-person meetings in Norwich is desirable where possible. 

Remuneration: Honorarium of £5,000 per annum. Expenses will be paid.
