Overall, Purpose of the Job

The University of Manchester is recruiting for a PDRA in Nuclear Fuel Manufacture, which will link with the wider Development of Robust Nuclear (DoRN) Fuels programme sponsored by Rolls-Royce. This project is exploring potential nuclear fuel materials which are designed to be used in extreme environments like space reactors, submarines or in micro-reactors. We are seeking a British National with a strong materials science or nuclear engineering background, keen to understand how we can develop the next generation of nuclear fuel materials. You’ll be part of a large and growing team of researchers, across 5 universities and Rolls-Royce, with the opportunity to support a number of related PhD projects in the area. You should have experience working in a materials science laboratory, using hazardous materials safely in a highly regulated environment.

Knowledge Exchange into Rolls-Royce Submarines will form a key component of the role, and the PDRA will be responsible for support and informal supervision of PhD students funded by Rolls-Royce in this area, and the dissemination of key findings into relevant teams at Rolls-Royce Submarines.

A report will be produced at the end of each year, and presentations of current work will be given at Raynesway in the context of the ongoing submarine programme. Given the nature of the research, an essential requirement of the role is that the PDRA must be a UK national, will be required to undergo security and will need to maintain this clearance for the duration of the position.
