ECAT-i (Edinburgh Clinical Academic Track - inclusive) is the University’s exciting academic track for all medical and surgical specialties, including primary care professionals.  ECAT-i Clinical Lectureships include a Wellcome PhD for Health Professionals in a world-leading research centre at the University of Edinburgh, with combined clinical training and practice in association with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and NHS Lothian.  The programme builds on the principles of research excellence and mentorship developed over the last two decades since the programme began in 2008, with a strong emphasis on research inclusivity and a positive research culture.

Before beginning the three-year PhD project, funding is provided for a 12-month preparatory period when selection of supervisors and planning of the PhD project are optimised with the support of the ECAT directors.  Following the PhD, there is funding for research training and clinical practice up to CCT + six months, or two years post-PhD as appropriate.

Vacancies are open to:

  • trainees in all GMC-recognised medical and surgical specialties;
  • primary care practitioners; and
