Applications are invited for a full-time Post Doctoral Research Associate to join the BioElectronic Systems Technology Group, led by Professor Roisin Owens, in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. The group core focus is developing advanced bioelectronic models to investigate the gut-brain axis.
The successful candidate will play a central role in developing and interrogating advanced models of the gut, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between the gut, the enteric nervous system (ENS), and the immune system. This will involve developing and validating in vitro models that integrate human organoid-derived epithelium, immune cells, and ENS components, and ex vivo models. The role will require the application and optimisation of electrical, optical, and metabolomic assays to investigate functional pathways relevant to the microbiome and the gut-brain axis.
We are looking for highly interdisciplinary candidates experienced in bioelectronic device design, characterisation, and application to biological systems. Significant experience with design and application of organic bioelectronics is essential. Applicants should have substantial experience with mammalian cell lines and cellular assays for characterisation of cell models. Stronger candidates would have additional related skillsets which could include proficiency in fluorescence microscopy, or in vivo experience.
The successful candidate should already have a PhD in Bioelectronics or a strongly related field, have a track record of training others in biological and electrochemical experimental techniques, and demonstrate general research skills such as experimental design, critical thinking, teamwork, and scientific communication. A commitment to academic research and a desire to make a positive impact on science and society are key attributes.
The PDRA will be expected to contribute to the development of independent research tasks under the project, manage key experimental setups, and collaborate closely with engineers, biologists, and external partners. The role holder will join a multidisciplinary team working at the interface of bioelectronics, tissue engineering, and gastrointestinal biology.
The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology at the University of Cambridge, working under the supervision of Professor Roisin Owens. The department offers world-class facilities and a vibrant research environment, with strong links to clinical and industrial partners.
The successful candidate is expected to start in early March 2026 as to allow progress and the timely delivery of the project goals.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
