Salary: £36,636, rising annually to £39,906 (plus on-call allowance £140.62 pcm / £1,687.80 per year)
Hours: 37 hours per week (Mon–Fri, with on-call week rota to support university emergencies and occasional out-of-hours / weekend work to support University events)

Oxford Brookes University is looking for a skilled Mechanical Technician to join our in-house Estates Mechanical Team. This is a secure, permanent role working across a large and varied university estate, including academic buildings, offices, student accommodation, workshops and public spaces.
Our Estates team looks after these buildings to keep them safe, functional and fit for purpose. We value skilled tradespeople and understand that the quality of our buildings depends on the quality of the people who maintain them.
You’ll carry out reactive repairs, planned maintenance and small improvement works, working as part of a professional, supportive team.
A basic DBS check is required.
What You’ll Be Doing
Mechanical, Plumbing & HVAC Maintenance
- Carry out reactive, planned and preventative maintenance
- Maintain and repair heating, ventilation, plumbing and gas systems
- Diagnose faults and complete repairs to a high standard across campus.
Installations & Improvement Works
- Undertake authorised mechanical and plumbing installations and adaptations
- Support system upgrades, refurbishments and energy-efficiency projects
- Carry out development works as directed by management.
Inspections & Reporting
- Carry out system checks, testing and fault finding
- Identify defects and provide clear reports to the Mechanical Team Supervisor.
Teamwork & Support
- Work closely with other technicians, engineers and external contractors
- Provide guidance and on-the-job support to handypersons and colleagues
- Communicate professionally with staff and students when supporting projects.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Work safely at all times in line with health & safety, gas and water regulations
- Complete job paperwork and digital records accurately
- Take part in emergency call-outs and occasional out-of-hours work.
Skills & Experience
- Completed a recognised mechanical services apprenticeship or equivalent experience
- Strong practical experience in mechanical, plumbing and HVAC maintenance and installation
- Competent working in complex commercial and domestic-style buildings
- Experience working in occupied buildings is desirable.
Safety & Compliance
- Fully Gas Safe registered and knowledgeable of gas legislation
- Good understanding of health & safety law, ACOPs and British Standards
- Committed to safe, compliant and professional working practices
- Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
Practical & Organised
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Can read technical drawings, write clear reports and use CAFM/mobile systems
- Able to prioritise workloads and manage materials effectively
- Good time management and communication skills.
Flexibility & Development
- Full UK driving licence
- Willing to take part in out-of-hours/ weekend work when required
- Open to training and ongoing development
- Prepared to support a “one team” estates approach across the university.
