The Opportunity:

Where discovery never stops. Be part of something bigger.

The University isn’t just any employer. We are part of a local community and a contributor to global thinking, progress and research. In Edinburgh, you are in one of the world’s most attractive cities with active arts and social sectors, while working in a University that has made significant contributions to society, medicine, physics and teaching for over four centuries. Our people have helped create the modern world and are working on more ground-breaking technologies and practices. Join the University of Edinburgh and you’ll be making a difference to everything around you.

ECAT-i (Edinburgh Clinical Academic Track – inclusive) offers an unparalleled opportunity to undertake a Wellcome PhD for Health Professionals, with combined clinical training and practice in a world-leading research centre at the University of Edinburgh. The programme aims to build on the principles of research excellence and mentorship developed during the successful ECAT Wellcome Clinical PhD programme, with a strong emphasis on research inclusivity and a positive research culture.

ECAT-i Veterinary Clinical Lectureships provide: (i) an introductory year with 30% time in relevant clinical specialty at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and 70% academic time to identify PhD supervisors and to develop a bespoke PhD project in one of the internationally competitive, multidisciplinary research centres at the University of Edinburgh; (ii) a 3-year full-time fully funded Wellcome PhD for Health Professionals; and (iii) up to 3 further years as a post-doctoral Clinical Lecturer or 3 years support to complete clinical specialty training and, with protected academic time, to initiate post-doctoral training and prepare applications for an intermediate fellowship or other academic post. Progression through the scheme is subject to satisfactory performance but does not involve competitive interviews after initial appointment.

Candidates who have already undertaken a period of full-time research leading to a doctoral degree are not eligible to apply.

You are required to be practicing clinically in the UK/Republic of Ireland, and to be registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • evidence of high academic achievement
  • you will have completed an internship/residency or had demonstrable experience in clinical practice

Disclosure Scotland check required.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week); however, we are open to considering part-time or flexible working patterns.

Closing date: 23/02/2026 at 11:59pm
