The role

We are looking to appoint an External Examiner for the Police Station Representatives Accreditation Scheme (PSRAS).

PSRAS is a compulsory qualification for solicitors and non-solicitors who provide legal advice at the police station on a legally aided basis.

The role will assure and maintain assessment standards for the PSRAS qualification on behalf of the Solicitors Regulation Authority.

We want to recruit an individual who has a strong commitment to equality and diversity and the delivery of fair assessments.

What we are looking for

We are looking for an individual who:

  • Is occupationally competent in relation to the work undertaken in giving advice in the police station
  • HAs occupational and teaching or assessment experience in relation to this work
  • Can commit time to conduct the role well. This may include travel to meetings, events, visiting the assessment organisation and the SRA
  • Has experience of evaluation of assessments and writing evaluation reports.
  • Has strong analytical skills
  • Can communicate clearly and accurately, both in writing and orally
  • Has a strong commitment to equality and diversity and the delivery of fair assessments.

Useful information

The successful applicant will start from 1 May 2026.

The commitment is likely to be between 10 – 15 days per year.

The role is remunerated at a full‑day rate of £400 gross (or £200 gross for a half day), plus reasonable travel expenses. Most of the work is remote but there may be some travel to observe assessments and attend examination boards.

The successful candidates will be engaged via a contract for services.

Please note that upon appointment, the External Examiners:

  • May not directly or indirectly organise, run, participate or otherwise be involved in any training or preparatory courses or assessments for the PSRAS qualification for the duration of their term of appointment
  • Will keep all information about the PSRAS assessments confidential.
