Purpose of the post

At HDR UK, we employ talented individuals who bring their own unique skills and experience to support our vision and benefit the whole team. The DARE UK Integration work programme in Phase 2 addresses the new systems and processes required to connect existing and new TREs and other service components of the landscape.

Ultimately it will provide the underpinning platform enabling secure interoperability between the core components of the DARE UK Transformational Programme, so that researchers can safely and seamlessly use the different capabilities across multiple TREs. By extension it will define the common, inter-service connectivity layer for all future capabilities that may arise from the DARE UK programme, or elsewhere.

We are looking for an experienced Technical Lead to take a hands-on role in coordinating the deployment of the “Test Environment for Trusted Research Environments” (TETREs) test network between partner sites and help to lead a programme of technology experimentation across the network (the “TETREs Lead”).

TETREs will build upon DARE UK work and broader practical experience from the TRE community to address two key challenges:

  • How best can we build repeatable and reconfigurable experimental testbed environments alongside existing TREs?
  • What existing software or standards are best suited to provide the interconnectivity between TREs and related services? Where are the points of convergence?

The TETREs Lead will work closely with, and take direction from, the DARE UK National Digital Infrastructure Technical Lead (“DARE UK Lead”).

Main responsibilities:

  • Lead the coordination of activities across the TETREs network. This will involve leading technical meetings of 5-10 research engineers from different partner organisations, agreeing task priorities and working hands-on with the team to accomplish the project goals.
  • Evaluation of DARE UK core technology research products as part of the TETREs test network. This will involve deployment, configuration, test and experimentation with Kubernetes-based infrastructure, both experimental and third-party open-source. This is a fast-moving environment. Three principal products will be:
    • An experimental SDN mesh connector technology
    • An experimental Kubernetes-based test environment
    • An experimental Kubernetes-based TRE environment “K8TRE”

Other products will be identified during project execution.

  • Oversight of a programme of experimental use-cases across the deployed network, designed in collaboration with the partners and the DARE UK Lead.
  • Production of a final writeup of experimental findings suitable for publication.

Desirable experience:

  • Significant experience of System Administration
  • Experience of leading an ISO27001 or CE compliant infrastructure
  • Experience of building and maintaining a Trusted Research Environment or Secure Data Environment
  • Experience of working across multiple teams building collaborations
