About the role:

We are looking for a Research Assistant to work on exciting research projects within the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Imperial Immunology theme.

The Immunology theme focuses on diseases relevant to our local population grouped into:

  1. antibody-mediated disorders;
  2. thrombo-inflammation;
  3. glomerulonephritis and
  4. renal transplantation.

We combine the world-leading immunology and inflammation expertise within our academic Centres for Inflammatory Disease and Haematology with the translational expertise of our multidisciplinary Clinical Centres. This supports our key aims: to ensure timely and accurate diagnosis; to fully optimise immunosuppression treatment; and to explore novel therapeutics. This position will provide research support on Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) and Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome (APS).

What you would be doing:

You will be working in the laboratory of Professor Nichola Cooper, and collaborating with Professor Matthew Pickering, the Co-Leads of the Immunology theme. You will provide technical support for the development of haematology tissue banks for the immunology theme for the BRC.

This will involve:

  1. collecting blood samples from our Haematology Clinics;
  2. processing and storage of samples following standard operating procedures;
  3. updating clinical databases to maintain accurate and timely phenotyping of research samples; and
  4. supervisory responsibility for aspects of day-to-day co-ordination, running and maintenance of the Immunology Theme projects.

You will have the opportunity to collaborate with other groups within the theme and colleagues in the local NHS Trust.

What we are looking for:

You should have a first/masters degree (or equivalent) in Biology, or a related discipline. You should have experience of working in a laboratory research environment and have knowledge of research databases. Previous experience in sample collecting and storage methods is desirable, but not essential.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression.
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.

Further Information

This is full-time post based at Imperial’s Hammersmith campus. It is fixed-term through to 31 March 2028.

If you have any further details about the role, please contact Professor Nichola Cooper (n.cooper@imperial.ac.uk).
