Associate Lecturer in Law (Multiple Posts Available)

University of York – York Law School

Based at University of York campus (with some remote working options available)

Join York Law School: Innovation in Action

York Law School (YLS) is not your typical law school. We are a collegial, student-centered department renowned for our pioneering use of Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Our curriculum doesn't just teach law; it integrates legal problem-solving and professional skills within a collaborative, modern framework.

We are looking for several Associate Lecturers to join our team of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) tutors. At YLS, we don't just teach law; we immerse students in it.

As we expand our student community and enhance our Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) pathways, we need innovative educators who are passionate about student-centred learning and skills development. Whether you are an experienced academic or a practitioner looking to transition into education, we provide an inclusive environment where your expertise can shape the next generation of legal professionals.

The Role

As an Associate Lecturer, you will be at the heart of our distinctive pedagogical model. Your primary focus will be facilitating the "student law firm" experience through PBL sessions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate & Mentor: Lead PBL sessions, seminars, and skills workshops at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Innovative Assessment: Design and deliver high-quality assessments and provide constructive feedback that drives student growth.
  • Curriculum Development: Contribute to the evolution of our learning resources, particularly as we integrate SQE-focused skills.
  • Academic Support: Provide dedicated guidance on study skills and academic development, ensuring an inclusive experience for a diverse student body.

Your Profile

We are looking for colleagues who are grounded in the foundations of legal knowledge but flexible enough to facilitate learning across various substantive areas.

Requirements:

  • Legal Expertise: A detailed knowledge of the law of England and Wales.
  • Educational Background: An undergraduate degree in English Law (or equivalent legal qualification/experience).
  • Teaching Excellence: An appropriate teaching qualification or a proactive willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP).
  • Student-Centric Mindset: A proven ability to supervise students, troubleshoot learning hurdles, and offer empathetic academic advice.

Why York?

The University of York is a member of the prestigious Russell Group, and York Law School consistently ranks highly for student satisfaction and research impact. We offer a culture that values your well-being, professional development, and the freedom to innovate.

Flexible Opportunities

We understand the need for work-life balance. We are offering several posts with flexible full-time or part-time arrangements (starting from 0.2 FTE). Please indicate your preferred working pattern in your application.

Informal Enquiries

We encourage potential candidates to reach out for an informal chat about the role or the PBL model. Contact: Dr Patrick Gallimore (Deputy Head of School) Email: patrick.gallimore@york.ac.uk.

Interview Date: To be confirmed.

The University strives to be diverse and inclusive  – a place where we can ALL be ourselves.

We particularly encourage applications from people who identify as Black, Asian or from a Minority Ethnic background, who are underrepresented at the University.

We offer family friendly, flexible working arrangements, with forums and inclusive facilities to support our staff. #EqualityatYork
