BACKGROUND OUTLINE

THE GARDEN

The Garden opened in May 2000 and is dedicated to the research and conservation of biodiversity, sustainability, lifelong learning and the enjoyment of our visitors.  Its focus on conservation of biodiversity means that an ethos of sustainability is core to the way in which the organisation operates, delivers education, maintains its estate, and its business activities are conducted and arranged.

Developed as one of three significant Millennium investments in Wales the Garden estate extends to some 560 acres in a combination of planted botanic garden and farmed NNR, all set in a former Regency Parkland of heritage importance in the Towy Valley.  The Garden’s estate facilities, buildings, and infrastructure includes Grade II listed buildings and parkland, an iconic world class architect designed Great Glasshouse, variety of Education teaching spaces, Science Centre, offices, a visitor reception Gatehouse, a corporate function facility, restaurant, teaching buildings, horticultural glasshouses, and a number of small-holding farmhouses around the periphery.

The Garden is a vital and important Education and Science centre recognised as a National Asset in the Science Strategy for Wales.  It is also a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) hub.  It routinely achieves more than 25,000 education and outreach engagements – the majority of these as on-site visits.  Its education facilities include specially designed Aqualab teaching space, purpose built classrooms, outdoor ‘back to nature’ landscaped areas with dipping ponds and shelters.  The Garden attracts pupil visits from schools in 17 of the 22 Welsh local authority areas as well as those from England and intermittent overseas groups.  It offers over 60 curriculum-linked courses, in a range of taught and self-led modes.

Education activities are embedded and integrated as a core part of the Garden’s purpose and extend from Foundation stage to Higher Education in close collaboration with conservation research, outdoor land-based teaching, horticulture training, and other aspects of the Garden’s activities.

As a regional visitor attraction and economic asset it is the most visited garden in Wales, has hosted over 2.2 million visitors, and has been voted the number one ‘Wonder of Wales’, ’Most Romantic Garden’ and ‘Best Children’s Garden’ by the Western Mail.   Various high-profile media polls have recognised the Garden and it has been voted the ‘No 1 Garden to Visit in Wales’.

The Garden is a charity that receives a proportion of its financial support from the Welsh Government and Carmarthenshire County Council. It is also a company limited by guarantee and generates over half its income through its own activities including commercial endeavours.  It is vigorous in bidding for additional resources from diverse external sources and grant-making bodies and enjoys a good rate of success in this.
